Inventions and Gratitude

Think of an invention that you are incredibly grateful for (a dishwasher, a chair, a tv, toilet paper, blankets, lip gloss, footballs, elevators, etc...) and write a letter to the inventor thanking him or her and telling him or her how grateful you are. You may want to compare your life now to what it was like before the invention. Don't worry that you don't know who actually invented the item. Simply make up a name and write a letter of gratitude.

Example:

Dear John Maytag,

Thank you so much for all of your hardwork in creating the dishwasher. I absolutely love it! I am so pleased that I can put all of my dirty dishes into a tank, add some detergent, and within an hour have clean dishes with no effort on my part. You see, when I was growing up, my sister and I had dish nights. It worked out alright, despite the fact that we couldn't play or watch tv until the dishes were done. The unfortunate thing is that my sister was a terrible dish washer. So, she usually left food debris on the dishes and then my parents made me re-wash them. Although I no longer live at home with my parents and sister, I still have quite a few dishes because I like to cook. Now, I just load, add detergent and go. Thanks for saving me at least 30 minutes per day! You are the best!

Gratefully yours,
Miss Miller

Dear Apple Co.,
Thanks so much for creating the iPod Nanos. I love them so much. Its so much easier to carry one of those around with all of you music in just one tiny thing that you can take anywhere. I also like how you can watch podcasts and look at pictures too!! It’s way easier than taking a potable CD player with all your CD’s (and I have a ton!!) and having to haul all that around. I love playing the games on there. The music quiz is so fun and I always try to win at Solitaire and beat my high score on Brick. This is one of the greatest inventions yet!! At least to me!! :)
Sincerely,
Jenna Brotz

Dear William iPod,

Thank you so much for inventing the iPod! You would not believe how my life has changed since the invention. I am a music fanatic and with just a CD player I could not have any variety with my music because you would always have to listen to the same music and the same kind of music all the time. You are such a hero for inventing Apple brand computers, and Apple iPods. I can not wait to see what other kinds of great inventions you will invent in the future. I am sure you will come up with many other kinds of crazy but extremely useful amazing kinds of electronics in the future.

Sincerely,
Sara Hofstad

Dear Sony Television,

You have made my life very relaxing. When I am tired or lonely these devices you have created make me more at ease with myself and it calms me. It makes my home so much more inviting to visitors. When ever friends come over that is the center of attention. I am so happy that there is a brain out there that has the mind of a genius. When I go to bed the television is what helps me fall asleep. I hope you will create more electronics so I can buy more and make my home more inviting.

Sincerely,
Laine Tomesch

P.S. Miss Miller some of this stuff is not true.

Dear Kimberly-Clark,

Thank you so much for inventing tissues. They are so handy in my life and everyone else’s. They are better than hankies, which you had to wash and carry around with you everywhere you went. Now with tissues you can just grab one blow your nose and throw it in the trash. I like it that tissues are nice and soft, they feel good on my nose. Tissues are also great to have around the house, to wipe off counters, to wipe off dirty faces and to blow more noses. I want to thank you again for inventing tissues...THANK YOU.
Sincerely,

Dear Apple and co.,

Thank you so much for inventing computers. They make life so much more easier. They are great to find information on. Like if you have some homework you can just type it up real quick and turn it in nice and neat. It also is handy for just being able to talk to your friends on e-mail. Also to play fun games. Of course I can't forget that with this I can get my down loads of music on my i-pod.
Sincerly,
Elizabeth

Dear Mr. Stich Blanket

Thank you so much for inventing the warm and cozy blanket. I am thankful for the blanket because usually when I go to bed I am freezing cold. On my bed I have six blankets on me to keep me warm. If the brains of yours wouldn’t have thought of a blanket I would be freezing cold pretty much my whole life because I am always cold. The blanket has been made for a while and I was born when it was made but if it wasn’t made the world would be different and cold everyone would suffer from coldness.

Dear Mr. creator of basketball,

Thank you so much for creating the best sport ever, basketball. Basketball is my life. I would love to play it everyday if I could. If the sport basketball wouldn’t have been invented I don’t know what I would do. My next favorite sport would probably be girl’s fast pitch softball then swimming. I like all the rules in basketball it makes it really exciting. Some people are really good at basketball and some aren’t but that’s okay. If there was no basketball I would die. Thank you so much for creating it. If it was created some other way I probably wouldn’t like it.

Thank you so much for inventing the microwave .I am thankful for the microwave because it warms up any type of food. Another reason why I am thankful for the microwave is because it can also worm up old food without burning it. I also like the microwave because I can make my pancakes or other foods even hotter than when they come of the grill Another thing that I like about the microwave is that they make special packets for it and it makes food. like macaroni, hot pockets and also soup. I also like the microwave because for some of the foods it has a special button to cook the food automatically like popcorn.

Dear Otto Wichterle and his assistant Dr. Drahoslav Lim,

Thank you so much for invented soft contact lenses. I use to wear glasses but these are so much easier. They make sports so much easier because I don't have to worry about glasses falling off and getting all messed up. I think that next you should invent everlasting lenses so that they never dry out. Your invention has helped so many people including myself. It is so cool how I can see so clearly out of what appears to be a piece of rubber. Thank you again and I am going to continue wearing them instead of glasses.

Sincerely,
Ben Gosselin

Dear Mr. ComputerGeek,

I’m very grateful that you invented the computer. It helps us with many everyday tasks, and provides irreplaceable information. It’s even helping me write this letter. I hope that you win an award for inventing the computer; I think it’s the most helpful invention ever.
I’m looking forward to all of the crazy accessories for computers that are yet to come. I have to still wonder…how did you invent this twisted contraption….? Did you put some circuits together and an image popped up? Or did you carefully and precisely aim microscopic little things into the computer…? Hmmmm, Well, I’m very, VERY, grateful for your powerful invention…THANK YOU!

Sincerely,
Haley Marie Brost

Dear, Ms Serveolious

Thank you for inventing volleyball. I just love the sport!! It is so fun to play!! Was it hard to think of what to call a spike or a dig? What is your favorite thing about the famous sport you invented? I love when you serve. How did you come up with an underhand serve and an overhand serve? I wish that some day I could meet you and you could show me some of your great techniques. I would really like to learn from you. Thanks for all your time in reading this letter that I Gabby Oreskovic have written to you. Stay well and keep sharp on your awesome skills.

Sincerely,
Gabby Rose Oreskovic

Dear Konrad Zuse,
My name is Fritz Copes. I am very glad you invented the computer. It gives me something to do in my spare time. It is completely worthwhile to use. This useful invention is helping me to write this letter right now. It wouldn’t have been possible if you hadn’t helped. This useful devise has been the source of all my information. It would have taken a long time to create the computer if you hadn’t given your ideas shape. This idea of yours has given shape to a new age. We are capable of more with amazing machines like these. It saves me hours of work using it. I am just one of your many admirers telling you this. You have done an amazing thing.

Thank you,
Fritz Copes

(This invention is in the future year of 2063 in the star trek universe.)

Dear Zepherm Cochran

Thanks a ton for inventing the warp engine. Your ideas were postivily facinating and the importance is huge. The way the starship defies einstien is great. You can travel past light speed by creating a warp field allowing for a fracture in subspace and you can drop to normal space and battle in warp. Thank you!

in your debt,
Zach

Dear HP computer company,

My life is so much easier with a computer. Before I always had to go to the library to find information for my homework, now all the information I need is in my house with a push of a couple of buttons. You can play many games like one of my favorites is to play is deer hunting , you can store your pictures on the computer so that your camera doesn't get full, you can download your favorite songs staight to your iPod. I just wanted to thank you for inventing such a useful device.

Sincerely,
Tyler Denow

Dear Mr. Fizzypop

I'm so glad you came up with soda it tasted so good every one wants soda. I think you should come up with a 25 gallon soda bottle for big parties and other things like that. Are you making a new soda? If you are I hope It goes great!
Here are some suggestions for new soda. I think you might like some of my ideas for example there is strawbarry vanilla Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew Code Blue, and last but not least please add the most effective burping formula. You should put vitamins in it so that my parents will let me have more. There should be more cans in a box. Is that ok with you? That way when my friends come over we won't run out? My dad would like you to add protein to it. If you had not made soda I do not know what I would have been stuck drinking, either water or milk the whole time.

Dear Mr. Football guy,

Thank you very much for inventing the game of football. Football is my favorite sport and I love everything about football the tackling the passing and the running. Practices can sometimes be tough but it is all worth it when it is time for the games to start when everyone is cheering for you. It feels good to hear you name being called after you make a tackle or making a good play. I think that the way that you designed the football was cool. When people didn’t wear helmets when they played when football was new it probably hurt a lot to play but it was probably just as fun as it is now.

Dear Ms. Girlscoutcookie,
Thank you so much for inventing Girl Scout cookies. They are so delicious! I wish they sold Girl Scout cookies year round because I would definitely buy them all the time because they are so yummy! I am so thankful that God created such a wonderful, smart woman. I want to be just as smart and successful and you are. I also thank you for them because even though they are cookies they still aren’t that unhealthy for you. Some are even fat-free. Everyone in my neighborhood is always excited about Girl Scout cookies. Well that’s about it. Thank you for everything you have done Ms. Girlscoutcookie!
Sincerely,
Karlee Tanel
