Comfort

As the weather becomes cooler and the air is crisp, I enjoy the cozy, comfortable things in life. I start making more soups, wearing my favorite worn-in sweatshirts, and snuggling in under my down comforter at home. All of these things make me feel warm and comfortable. In your entry this week, talk about and describe the things that make you feel comfortable. Maybe there is a certain room in your house or a certain place that makes you feel comfortable. Perhaps you have a stuffed animal from your childhood that used to (or still does) comfort you. It could even be a person with whom you feel very safe and comfortable. No matter what or who it is, describe what it is that makes you feel safe and comfortable.

Mad Scientist

Tonight is the Mad Science event at school and I am sure there will be some neat experiments to see as well Science to be learned. Pretend that you are a Mad Scientist who has just created a new potion that will have magical or crazy results if used. Vacation Mania

I love to travel and I find that most people do as well. I've had some far reaching trips (China, Australia, Fiji, and Mexico) as well as some nearby trips (Minnesota, Chicago, camping). I've enjoyed a crazy road trip out west, adventure filled trips (whitewater rafting), and family vacations where things just kept going wrong (flat tires, sunburn, getting sick on the airplane). No matter where I travel and who I travel with, I have a great time and lots of memories to share! In your blog this week, tell about your most memorable vacation or trip ever.

Summer Plans

Can you believe the end of the year is already here? Yikes! It feels like we just started 6th grade together! I know you are getting excited because you all are a bit squirrely at this time of year! Tell us all about your summer plans. Are you travelling somewhere? What will you do with your free time (sports, clubs, reading, video games, outside activities, etc....)? What are you most excited to do?

Going to Greece

Picture this:

You are a mortal, living in Greece, thousands of years ago. Your people have just been blessed with the gift of fire from a kind-hearted god, named Prometheus! Great news! You can now cook your food, heat your homes, have light in the evenings, and make metal tools to hunt with and defend yourself. Wait, what's that? Your benefactor, Prometheus has been chained to a mountain where an eagle comes each day to eat his liver because of the kindness he showed to you and the other mortals. Oh No! You must come up with a plan to help Prometheus escape the agony of Zeus. How can you free him from the grips of Zeus and his jealousy?

That's your job-sixth graders! Come up with a story that explains how you freed Prometheus from the evil clutches of Zeus!

Time Machine

In the Movie, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (made in 1989-when I was 9 and rated as one of the 50 best comedies of all times), Bill and Ted climb into a time machine and travel back into history. If you were able to climb into a time machine, who would you go back and visit? Why would you select that person?

Advice

Write a top ten list, giving advice to the future 6th graders (current 5th graders). Be sure to include tips that would have been helpful to know, coming into 6th grade. Use your experiences to help them be successful. (You may not state anything that is cruel towards any person)

Gratitude for Inventions

Think of an invention that you are incredibly grateful for (a dishwasher, a chair, a tv, toilet paper, blankets, lip gloss, footballs, elevators, etc...) and write a letter to the inventor thanking him or her and telling him or her how grateful you are. You may want to compare your life now to what it was like before the invention. Don't worry that you don't know who actually invented the item. Simply make up a name and write a letter of gratitude.

Dear John Maytag,

Thank you so much for all of your hardwork in creating the dishwasher. I absolutely love it! I am so pleased that I can put all of my dirty dishes into a tank, add some detergent, and within an hour have clean dishes with no effort on my part. You see, when I was growing up, my sister and I had dish nights. It worked out alright, despite the fact that we couldn't play or watch tv until the dishes were done. The unfortunate thing is that my sister was a terrible dish washer. So, she usually left food debris on the dishes and then my parents made me re-wash them. Although I no longer live at home with my parents and sister, I still have quite a few dishes because I like to cook. Now, I just load, add detergent and go. Thanks for saving me at least 30 minutes per day! You are the best!

What Do You Want on Your Tombstone? The above phrase is a clever marketing tool for Tombstone Pizzas. However, it is a good question to ask yourself as well. Someday, when you die and are called to eternal life in Heaven, what do you want your tombstone to say? You can select one word and explain why that word would be on your tombstone, or you maybe could choose a favorite quote or Bible passage and explain why you would have that. If neither of those ideas seem appealing, you can write an entire paragraph that you would want printed on your tombstone. So, tell us, WHAT DO YOU WANT ON YOUR TOMBSTONE?

Congratulations! Your family was just chosen for Extreme Makeover, Home Edition 2008! The host of the show, Ty Pennington, wants to help you design your dream bedroom. In Social Studies, we have been talking about other world religions (Buddhism and Hinduism). Since they believe in reincarnation (and we obviously do not), I want you to put yourselves in their shoes. If you were to be reincarnated tomorrow, what would you come back as? Freedom

With our Veteran's Day celebration last Tuesday and the letter that Mr. Riederer read in chapel from a member of our church in the military, we were reminded of the sacrifice made for our freedoms. Many men and women have died in the last 250 years to keep America a great country with many freedoms and rights. Write a letter to any serviceman or woman (you can make up a name) and thank him or her for the sacrifice made for our freedoms. Your letter can be specific to a veteran of a particular war (The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, WWI, WWII, The Vietnam War, The War in Iraq, etc...) or it can just be a letter thanking the veteran for all of the freedoms you have. Be specific when you thank him/her and tell him/her the rights and freedoms you are most grateful for and why(the freedom of religion, speech, the freedom from slavery, etc...).

Pet Peeves

We all have things that drive us bonkers at times. What are some of your "pet peeves" and why? Be sure to "guard your mouth" (watch what you say) so that you do not offend anyone. In other words, do not talk about anyone who may annoy you. This is a chance to talk about the things that annoy you.

Daedalus and Icarus

After reading the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus, you learned that they escaped the castle by building a set of wings using eagle feathers, wood, and wax. However, because Icarus flew too close to the sun, his wings melted and he fell to his death in the ocean.

Your job is to create an alternate ending to the myth. Write an ending which explains how they escaped from the castle. You can start your story at the part of the myth where Daedalus and Icarus had just been sentenced to life in the castle.

Welcome back from our hiatus (break) from blogging!

Metaphor mania has magically morphed into sizzling similes and I am now using amazing alliteration.

We have been talking all about poetic forms in Language Arts class. Rack your brain and give an example of each poetic form listed below. (This blog does not need to be 100 words)

A Name of Fame

This week, we will experiment with poetry as you try writing your first acrostic poem. An acrostic poem takes a word, spelled out the long way, and then has a word or two coming from each letter of the original word (see below). Use your full name and write an acrostic poem. Then, pick another word (at least 5 letters long) and make an acrostic poem from that word as well. Try not to have more than 2 words coming from each letter. Don't worry about the 100 word rule this week. See my example:

Reflections of Giving

What a fantastic gift we were given on Friday-no School! I hope you all enjoyed your day off. Tell us what you did on your unexpected snow day.

Details, Details, Details

Select a specific item to describe (it could be a food, an animal, an item in your room, a sport's team, etc..). In your blog, specifically describle your object with great detail. Then, skip down a few lines and type in the word you were describing. Your classmates and other guest readers will try to guess what you are describing based on your spectacular description skills! (You may need to describe two seperate items in order to reach your 100 word minimum) See the example below:

This animal lives in the sea and is one of God's most unique creations. It may appear like any other fish most of the time, but can transform into one unusual creature if it feels endangered. This water animal protects itself by blowing its body out and appearing as a water porcupine with sharp pin-like needles popping out all over its body. Its coloring is fairly bland, being mainly shades of brown. It however can be shades of blue or green. Some people eat this fish and pay large amounts of money to do so. However, I am not sure I would because the ovaries, skin, muscles and, above all, the liver may contain a deadly poison.

Imagine that one day as you are walking around town you come across some kind of a magic genie in a lamp and you are granted 3 wishes. What would you wish for and why? (You may NOT wish for more wishes-that is a copout answer)

Role Models

Role models are people who live their life in a certain way that makes others want to live their lives to accomplish excellent or praiseworthy things. Think of a famous person (dead or alive) who you consider to be a role model and tell why you look up to that person and what makes him/her special.

Travels

Travelling is one of my favorite things to do when I have free time and spare money. I have had great trips that took me far away and nearby as well. Someday, I would like to travel to every continent. So far, I have been to Asia (China), Australia, and of course North America. Share about your favorite family vacation (even if it was in Wisconsin-some of my best travels have been no further than an hour or two away!)

Alright everyone, here is the positive spin on the back to school blues. Teachers start on Tuesday and you guys still get two full weeks off! Carpe Diem! (seize the day)

August is Here!

Sorry to be the one to announce the obvious-but today is August 1st. School starts in 27 days (less than 4 weeks)! Your summer is 2/3 over. How are you all feeling about that? Are you ready to be back or do you need another 10 weeks of summer? Did anyone start their school supply shopping yet?

Hot! Hot! Hot!

What are you all doing to escape the heat these past few days? Hopefully everyone is staying cool and enjoying the long summer days! You are all in my prayers!

Bored yet?

I'm glad to hear all about your fun and some not-so-fun summer breaks so far. Is anyone bored to the point of missing school for the fact that you get to see all of your friends every day? Here is a cool picture from Millenium Park in Chicago. I was there a week ago and there are these 50 feet fountains that have LED screens with faces of people on them. Every 2 or 3 minutes, water comes shooting out of their mouths. Pretty wild!

Remember the Good Times

What will you remember most about your 6th grade experience? You can talk about projects, funny events, specific classes, extra-curricular activities, or anything else that really stands out. Keep your comments positive and uplifting (do not make fun of anyone).

Mafia Ties

Rule for Life

In Language Arts class, you will all be reading the novel Bud, Not Buddy. In this book, by Christopher Paul Curtis, Bud has a set of rules on how to live his life. For example, rule #328 says:

"When you make up your mind to do something, hurry up and do it. If you wait, you might talk yourself out of what you wanted in the first place."

Spring Break Blues

If you could choose to be on "Survivor", "The Amazing Race", or "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", which show would you choose and why? How do you see the end of the show working out for you?

What do you want on your Tombstone?

The above phrase is a clever marketing tool for Tombstone Pizzas. However, it is a good question to ask yourself as well. Someday, when you die and are called to eternal life in Heaven, what do you want your tombstone to say? You can select one word and explain why that word would be on your tombstone, or you maybe could choose a favorite quote or Bible passage and explain why you would have that. If neither of those ideas seem appealing, you can write an entire paragraph that you would want printed on your tombstone. So, tell us, WHAT DO YOU WANT ON YOUR TOMBSTONE?

Greek gods

Make up your own Greek god and describe him or her thoroughly. Remember this is a Greek god, so it should not be futuristic in description. Give him or her certain powers or positive attributes. Don't forget to give him/her a few negative qualities as well.

The Future

Technology has changed quickly in the last few years! While at the movies on Friday night, the screen came up that reminded everyone to turn their cell phones off. I mentioned to my friend that 10 years ago, you would have never seen that sign because very few people had portable phones. Internet was a new concept when I was in Middle School and e-mail didn't become very popular until about 10 years ago. What changes do you think will be made with technology in the future? Write about some of the advances that you think will be made. (Example: when I was 5 years old, my neighbor predicted that in the year 2000, people would be driving cars that fly, similar to small airplanes. Well, it is all done with and it seems that everyone survived Poetry Cafe on Thursday night. Use this week's blog to reflect upon the night.
